Violence erupted after a crowd gathered outside Alice Springs Hospital following the arrest of Jefferson Lewis. Mr Lewis was wanted for the alleged murder of five-year-old Kumanjayi Little Baby, whose body was found south of Alice Springs on Thursday morning.
Police clashed with dozens of rioters calling for traditional “payback” to be carried out. Mr Lewis has been flown to Darwin. Robin Granites, a senior Yapa elder and spokesperson for the family of Kumanjayi Little Baby, has appealed for calm.
