The government has outlined details of its new Media Bargaining Incentive, which would tax large digital platforms up to 2.25% of Australian revenue unless they strike deals to pay for local journalism.
US tech giants Meta and Google have criticised the plan as unfair, while Australian media companies have welcomed the proposal.
Former chair of Australia’s competition watchdog Rod Sims, who helped draft the first attempt at imposing the levy, has praised the government’s initiative and said such a bargaining arrangement is ‘fundamental to democracy’.
