Dashcam and CCTV footage have revealed the tense and chaotic confrontation that ended in the fatal stabbing of father-of-six Jason Smith in Bellambi, near Wollongong. The incident involved Smith and his long-time friend, Paul Cairney, and unfolded after a dispute over living arrangements escalated dramatically.
The video compilation shows the pair arguing before the situation turns physical, with both men seen wielding objects during the altercation. At one stage, Cairney is seen holding a baseball bat, while Smith’s belongings — including a trailer displaying a sovereign citizen flag — are placed on the street.
As tensions rise, the confrontation moves from the backyard to the front of the property. Audio captured on a doorbell camera records the final moments of the dispute, with Smith later seen walking onto the road injured before collapsing.
In June 2025, a jury found Cairney guilty, and he was sentenced in the NSW Supreme Court to 20 years in prison, with a non-parole period of 13 years and six months. The court heard Cairney claimed he acted in self-defence, but the judge determined Smith was unarmed at the time of the final encounter.
The sentencing also took into account emotional statements from Smith’s family, who described him as a devoted father and grandfather. Cairney will be eligible for parole in June 2036.
