Russian security official rules out ‘threat’ to Greenland, calls it US ‘horror story’ justification

Russian Security Council deputy chairman Dmitry Medvedev has called the United States’ operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro “a catastrophe in the field of international law and international relations”.

In a wide-ranging interview, Medvedev said the US’ actions were “completely untenable from a legal standpoint” and added its claims that Russia and China posed a threat to Greenland were “a horror story used to justify (its) behaviour”.

US President Donald Trump has previously said Greenland is vital for the US military and “is covered with Russian and Chinese ships all over the place”, arguing Denmark has not done enough to protect the territory or negate the threats surrounding it.

Speaking to reporters in Moscow, Medvedev also said, “I do not want to escalate the situation, but it is dangerous”, and noted that Russia has recently resumed discussions with the US.
