Inuit makes Greenland claim amid sovereignty struggle

As U.S. President Donald Trump talks of buying, owning or even taking Greenland and Denmark asserts its legal sovereignty, the island’s Inuit people are somewhat bemused at the very idea that someone might own the ground beneath their feet.
“In Inuit understanding, owning land is something that is the wrong question…”
Rakel Kristiansen is from a family of Shamanic practitioners.
“The question should be who is responsible for the land. The land has been here before we ever came to be and it will be after we disappear. So, the way that Inuit sees it is that you cannot own something that you are part of.”
Kaaleeraq Ringstead was born here in Kapisillit, a tiny settlement of wooden houses clinging to the shore of a fjord east of the capital, Nuuk.
Now 74 years old, he serves in the church on a cliff that overlooks the village.
Speaking to Reuters in Greenlandic, he said it was very strange to hear Donald Trump talk about buying their land.
He said since childhood he was used to the idea that one could not own land, only rent it.
