Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, has been sworn in as New York City’s mayor, becoming the youngest person ever to hold the position. The African-born immigrant made history as the city’s first Muslim mayor and first of South Asian descent, taking the oath of office using a Quran. Mamdani has pledged to make New York more affordable through free childcare and buses, frozen rents, and increased taxes on the wealthy and large corporations.
