Arrests in Minnesota after YouTuber kickstarts $9B fraud probe

The FBI is “surging” resources into one of America’s states, Minnesota, to investigate further after the discovery of an extraordinarily large welfare fraud scheme operating inside one of its migrant communities. It could be the mere “tip of a very large iceberg”.
That is the assessment of FBI Director Kash Patel, an appointee of US President Donald Trump, who announced the surge on social media today.
“The FBI believes this is just the tip of a very large iceberg. We will continue to follow the money and protect children, and this investigation very much remains ongoing,” he said.
The scandal involves members of Minnesota’s Somali community, who were caught defrauding government programs on an astonishing scale. Prosecutors say they may have stolen up to $US9 billion.
“The magnitude cannot be overstated,” Assistant US Attorney Joe Thompson said last week.
“What we see in Minnesota is not a handful of bad actors committing crimes. It’s staggering, industrial-scale fraud.”
It first exploded in 2022, when prosecutors charged 47 people for defrauding a Covid-era child nutrition scheme. The perpetrators claimed money from the government, saying they had fed thousands of children, when the true figure was zero. Investigators found that some of the sites, where they’d supposedly operated, were carparks or empty stores.
