Newly released close-up vision reveals the terrifying moments of chaos following the Bondi Beach terror attack, including the shocking case of an innocent bystander mistaken for a gunman and held at gunpoint by police. The man, wearing a black Givenchy shirt, bravely rushed onto the footbridge after the alleged shooters were neutralised, kicking a rifle away and raising his hands while shouting “don’t shoot”. Despite complying, he was fired upon, assaulted by members of the public, and restrained as police worked to secure the volatile scene.

The dramatic footage, filmed by 7News cameraman Nick Castellaro, captures the confusion as officers fend off civilians attempting to intervene, while the bystander is eventually released once police realise the case of mistaken identity. Castellaro, who rushed from his nearby flat as gunfire rang out, also recorded the terrifying moment he came under direct fire from terrorist Naveed Akram, as well as the heroic actions of Ahmed al Ahmed, who disarmed second gunman Sajid Akram.

The video documents police performing CPR on one of the attackers, civilians being restrained, and the raw panic as officers worked to regain control. Fifteen innocent people were killed in Australia’s worst mass shooting since Port Arthur, including a 10-year-old girl, with dozens more injured. Authorities have declared the Bondi attack a terrorism incident, prompting renewed scrutiny of gun laws and intelligence failures as the nation mourns the victims.
