Netanyahu blames Australian government for Bondi Beach shooting
The Israeli government laid blame at the feet of the Australian government for the Bondi Beach terror attack, saying it has not done enough to combat antisemitism.
At least 16 people have died, including one of the alleged gunmen, and dozens more were injured in a terrorist attack authorities say was designed to target the Jewish community in Sydney.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu labelled the shooting a “cold-blooded murder”, saying he wrote to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in August to warn him that recognising a Palestinian state will pour “fuel on the antisemitic fire”. He also accused the government’s policies of “encouraging” antisemitism.
“You let the disease spread, and the result is the horrific attacks on Jews,” said Netanyahu.
Israel’s diaspora affairs ministry went further, claiming: “the blood of the victims is on the hands of the Australian government”.
When asked about Netanyahu’s comments, Albanese declined to directly respond, instead saying: “This is a moment for national unity.”
“This is a moment for Australians to come together. That’s precisely what we’ll be doing,” he said.
