Shoebridge takes aim at billionaire influence on Australian politics in Press Club address
Greens leader David Shoebridge has used his first National Press Club address to highlight financial inequality, arguing billionaires “control our economy”.
“Their wealth is so extreme that they can buy a politician a plane or an office block and it means no more to them than us buying a friend a lunch”.
Citing figures from the World Inequality Database, he said the top 1 per cent of Australians have more wealth than the bottom 75 per cent combined.
Shoebridge also used the address to announce the Greens’ plans for tax reform, saying it would provide Australians an extra $1,000 in cost-of-living relief.
He said the $22 billion tax plan would be paid for by increasing corporate taxes in the resources sector.
“The Greens would fund this plan by making gas and mining corporations pay back $45 billion a year out of their windfall profits,” Shoebridge said.
