Video footage has captured the moment Italian protesters broke through security to gain entry to the Colosseum in Rome amid protests about the cost of living.
Protesters forced their way through the gates of Rome’s Colosseum on Saturday October 24th 2026, confronting security staff during a demonstration against war and the rising cost of living in Italy. The march had reportedly moved off its planned route and headed towards the ancient landmark while tourists were still inside, creating a tense scene in one of Rome’s most visited historic sites.
Riot police were deployed to the area as demonstrators gathered around the Colosseum, though the standoff there did not escalate into direct clashes. Italy’s Culture Ministry later said there was no damage to the Colosseum and no injuries were reported following the breach.
Later in the evening, clashes broke out between protesters and police in central Rome, with officers using water cannons to disperse crowds and detain some demonstrators. The incident has drawn attention amid wider concerns over anti-war protests, economic pressure, and public unrest in Italy.
