The Deniliquin ute muster first began way back in 1999 – but it wasn’t out of celebration… It was out of desperation to save the town of Deniliquin.
The New South Wales farming community on the edge of the Outback was crippled in the 90s by one of the worst droughts in the nation’s history.
So locals came up with a wild idea to bring visitors to the flattest natural open plains on earth.
Now, the Deniliquin ute muster attracts more that 20,000 people over two days – who come to celebrate all things Australia and all things country – especially the humble ute.
There’s a long list of ute competitions, carnival rides, bull-riding events and countless attractions for kids.
At night, major musical acts light up the stage – and this year it was Tones and I and Lee Kernaghan headlining the action.
The festival has also been coined the new ‘Tinder’ with many isolated country folks who struggle to meet new people using the event to find love.
One of the unofficial mantras of attendees is to ditch the dating apps and talk to people in the real world.
