Trump says US forces to leave Iraq after more than a decade
United States President Donald Trump has announced the departure of US forces from Iraq after a 12-year fight against the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) group.
Some observers and Iraqi security experts say the withdrawal — agreed to in 2024 under then-US president Joe Biden — could provide Iran and its allies an opportunity, while also allowing other US enemies to stage a comeback, including IS.
