Proudly of Tongan and First Nations heritage, dancer Daniel Mateo says movement is more than performance – it’s a way of connecting two worlds. An accomplished dancer and choreographer with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander company Bangarra Dance Theatre, Daniel is using contemporary and traditional dance to explore the intersections of culture, identity and belonging.
Through his dance film Brown Boys, he’s challenging ideas about what it means to carry multiple Indigenous identities in modern Australia. His story reveals how dance can become a powerful language for preserving thousands of years of cultural heritage while creating something entirely new.
