Houthi-Saudi conflict escalates in Yemen
Conflict in Yemen is entering a new phase, with Houthi positions along the Red Sea coming under bombardment by Saudi Arabia, according to the rebel group.
Facing retaliatory strikes, Saudi Arabia’s civil defence issued, but since lifted, warnings of potential danger in four cities.
In advances following a week-long offensive, the Houthis seized the Yemeni side of the Bab al-Mandab Strait, one of the world’s most important shipping arteries and the southern gateway to the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, threatening Saudi oil exports diverted from the Strait of Hormuz.
Hundreds have been killed and tens of thousands displaced as rebel Houthi forces in Yemen advanced on key cities.
