The Alternative for Germany (AfD) surged into first place in state elections in Saxony-Anhalt on Sunday, putting the far-right party on the cusp of power at state level.
The party wants to heavily restrict immigration, restore ties with Russia, quit the euro and promote unashamed German patriotism.
While the AfD did not secure enough votes to win an absolute majority in parliament, the wider political significance of the election, which saw turnout over 80 per cent, according to broadcaster ZDF, was clear.
