To the outside world, when police arrive at a suburban front door, it is supposed to bring safety. But for domestic violence survivor Sarah, the night officers surrounded her home felt like a terrifying invasion
It was 4am when about 15 police officers arrived outside after a neighbour reported hearing a door slam. Sarah had not called 000, nor was there any domestic violence occurring inside her home. As a survivor carrying significant past domestic violence trauma, confusion and terror immediately set in.
Weighing just 45kg, Sarah was terrified, overwhelmed, and too frightened to open the door to a wall of large, hostile male officers. What followed was a nightmare that still haunts her family. Police forced entry, and body-worn camera footage captured the disturbing reality of what happened inside.
