Victorian Premier Ben Carroll has abolished a secret tax that was introduced at the beginning of last year, which increased public transport costs to fund the controversial suburban rail loop. The levy was only revealed to the public through an Auditor-General’s report released yesterday. Carroll cited a lack of transparency in how the charge was created and implemented as the reason for scrapping it, though he would not confirm when he became aware of the levy.
