A glacier collapse in the Himalayas at the Nepal-China border in Tibet registered as a 5.2 magnitude seismic event, triggering a devastating wall of ice and water that travelled at least 70 kilometres down mountain valleys. The cascade destroyed infrastructure including a border building and created a massive flood as debris temporarily dammed then burst through narrow valleys. Satellite imagery reveals extensive scarring across the landscape, with the steep mountain geography severely hampering rescue and recovery operations.
