Indonesia is struggling to contain a wildfire crisis now spreading across the archipelago – fuelled by a severe El Niño, now expected to become the worst ever recorded.
More than 285,000 hectares of land have already been blackened across the country.
With more than 2,000 fire hotspots detected over the past week, more is burning by the day.
So far, some of the worst blazes have been on the island of Borneo, where decades of draining the vast peatlands have primed them for destruction.
International Correspondent Claudia Farhart visited Palangkaraya in Central Kalimantan, where everyday people are being recruited to fight the fires – sometimes in their own backyards.
