The Milky Way’s fastest star could expose secrets of our supermassive black hole

ANU Astrophysicist and Cosmologist Brad Tucker explains a discovery about the fastest star in the Milky Way zooming at 25,000 kilometres per second around the supermassive black hole.

“The star, named S301, is near the black hole … travelling at about 10 per cent the speed of light,” Mr Tucker told News24.

“It’s actually a critical part to measure the black hole that will tell us not only its growth, but also the stuff falling in.”
