Papua New Guinea approves landmark defence treaty with Australia

Papua New Guinea has approved a landmark defence treaty with Australia, which will see both nations “act to meet the common danger” if either comes under attack.

The deal opens the pathway for up to 10,000 Papua New Guineans to join the ADF and will also see new reserve forces and training facilities being established.

The signing of the treaty, which is expected to take place early next week, is being seen as a major setback for China’s strategic ambitions in the South Pacific.
