Trump says he will soon declare Strait of Hormuz a US territory

Transit through the Strait of Hormuz appeared to grind to a near standstill on Friday after two more ships were attacked there and the United States said it could maintain a naval blockade of Iran indefinitely.
Nine vessels passed through the strait on Thursday (August 13), up from five on Wednesday but below the average of 12 for August.
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said early Saturday (August 15) that Tehran would not be intimidated by threats or a show of force by Washington after Trump said he would declare the Strait of Hormuz a U.S. territory.
Commenting on Trump’s statements, Gharibabadi said in a post on X that the strategic waterway would only be opened or closed under Iran’s authority.
