PM champions Palestinian statehood at UN: ‘Real hope for a place they can call home’
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has championed Palestinian statehood while addressing the United Nations General Assembly, saying the recognition “is about real hope for a place to call home” for the Palestinian people.
His speech at the high-level two-state solution session comes a day after Australia officially recognised the State of Palestine, a move met with fervent criticism from the Opposition and the Israeli government.
“This is the same hope that sustained generations of Jewish people, the same hope that binds us all to our countries and cultures and drives us to want a better life for our children,” he said.
Albanese also urged the Israeli government to “accept its share of responsibility” for the “humanitarian catastrophe” in Gaza, and said Israel’s move to annex “parts of Palestine and permanently displace the Palestinian people risks putting a two-state solution beyond reach”.
Addressing global leaders, Albanese said: “Working together, we can build a future where instead of children in Gaza dying in pain, living in fear, or being taught to hate, they can go to school and build a life in larger freedom.”
Roughly 150 of the UN’s member states, or more than three-quarters, have now recognised Palestinian statehood.
