Wild footage has captured the moment a huge fireball erupted in Sydney’s west, sending fist-sized concrete blocks and a chemical tank into the air as flames soared up to 150m into the sky.

More than 200 firefighters were called in, with dozens dodging fist-sized concrete blocks that rained down on them when the blaze erupted on Saturday evening.

The inferno took place at a waste facility factory fire at North St Marys in Sydney’s west.

Holes were blown out of neighbouring buildings, and two firefighters suffered minor hand injuries.

It has been described as “one of the biggest fires” western Sydney has seen in years by a Fire and Rescue NSW spokesperson.

Aerial platforms were brought in to battle the blaze from above, with more than 50 units attending to help.
