How to see Melbourne’s St Kilda penguins (it’s… no walk on the beach)

Melbourne’s St Kilda Penguins has finally reopened to the public after four years, but free tickets are fully booked until 1 April 2026.

Locals and tourists have criticised the new online booking system, which lets visitors reserve spots to see the penguins from a dedicated viewing platform up to six months in advance but doesn’t allow online cancellations.

Operator Phillip Island Nature Parks, which also runs the Phillip Island Penguin Parade, said would-be visitors should “keep an eye” on the booking website for the April 2026 ticket release, as well as any earlier openings caused by cancellations.

But uncertainty remains over whether this beloved Melbourne attraction will stay free — leaving some wondering if seeing the penguins will soon cost more than just a little waddle.
