Perfume enjoying tigers at Melbourne Zoo

Indrah and Hutan, the 16-year-old Sumatran tigers at Melbourne Zoo, love perfume. When keepers spray piles of leaves, both roll in the scent and demonstrate the Flehmen response, where their arch mouths resembling a grin, trying to inhale as much scent as possible.

Melbourne Zoo has a collection of over 100 donated perfumes which are used to entice and engage many of the resident carnivores. The scents are often swapped around for novelty, but the tigers definitely have their favourites.

“Cinnabar is by far Indrah’s favourite perfume,” says Melbourne Zoo Carnivore keeper Jess Stockton. “She rolls around, holds the leaves in her paws and nuzzles in the leaves”.
