A suspect has died and a bystander injured after dozens of shots were fire outside the White House, which was sent into lockdown during the shocking incident.
The shooting unfolded on Saturday evening, Washington time, with US President Donald Trump present at the time as he worked to negotiate a peace deal with Iran.
In a statement, the US Secret Service confirmed a shooter produced a gun from a bag near the corner of 17th St and Pennsylvania Ave about 6pm local time and “began firing”.
“Secret Service police officers returned fire, striking the suspect, who was transported to an area hospital, where he later died,” the statement said.
“During the shooting one bystander was also struck by gunfire.”’
US news outlets have identified the gunman as mentally ill man Nasire Best, 21, of Maryland, with the New York Post reporting he believed he was Jesus Christ.
